DAY 1: Introduction

Welcome, horror writers!  This workshop focuses on writing Ekphrastic Horror from real, surreal, contemporary, and historical photographs.  We will examine images strange and terrifying, symbolist, realist, grotesque, disturbing yet ethereal, beautifully gothic, and monstrous.  We will experiment with creative writing techniques to generate original flash fiction “horror” from photographs.  We will construct, deconstruct, and subvert traditional horror genre elements by reimaging, reinventing, and reinterpreting ghosts, monsters, witches, castles, haunting, terror, atmosphere, and foreshadowing.  Through flash fiction, we will begin transforming horror genre elements into new experimental tropes by seeking ekphrastic inspiration from photographs.

Feel free to bend and blend genres in this workshop.  After all, this is a Bending Genres workshop!  In your writing, you can combine horror with the surreal, the experimental, the real, the irreal.  You can also combine historical images with contemporary images, real images with altered images, film with still photographs.

Reimagine the tropes of the horror genre.  Make the genre your own.
