For the whole day, keep a notebook or some means of taking notes with you, and write down almost everything that happens. Even if you’re working, or going to class, or just reading, or just quickly heading to the store – write down interesting conversations, behavior, anecdotes from books. This may be an even more than usually productive exercise because with the coronavirus still out there but more people vaccinated, there will be more people emerging back into life, unsure of how to act or be around others. Which is great fodder for fiction!

Now, later at night, look at your notes. Write two very short pieces – even just a few sentences each – using the notes you’ve written as primary source material. Make sure they are not just an observation, but a story, no matter how short they are. Something should happen in a story, or be surprising, or make a turn, no matter how slight.
