Barbie and Ken Have a Difficult Conversation

by | February 2021 A (Day 2)

I think we should talk.

Yeah, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about that…

Good, because the more we talk about it, the less of a big deal it is, really.

I wanted you to hear it from me first.

I mean we’re creative people. Why not be creative in our relationship?

I should have talked to you about it first, but, you know…all the celebrities were doing it…

We’re both smart enough to know rules are just invented constructs—it’s not realistic.

I feel bad.

You can’t help it, I know that. I’m not judging. And having more options doesn’t mean that we love each other less. I mean, it’s just a stupid word.

Yeah, it doesn’t mean anything. You’re right. I know it’s not really lost.

Wait a minute—you made a sex tape?

I put it in a safe place, but…you mean you didn’t find it?

You made a sex tape without asking me?

I thought you wouldn’t want to.

I’m silent.

You’re mad, aren’t you?

He drops his smiling face in his plastic hands.

  1. Nancy Stohlman

I was working on Prompt 10, but it felt like cheating to post since it’s a story I’ve been working on for a long time. So here is something a bit more raw. I enjoyed separating the two conversations and then putting them back together…Thanks for reading!

  2. Laurie Marshall

I like it! The impossible perfection of trying to be Barbie and Ken as a vehicle for two people wanting to be perfect in their relationship. So good.

  3. sara lippmann

I like how you play around with this dialogue at cross purposes (polyamory meets sex tape) and I want this Ken and Barbie sex tape! and the puppetry of the end, the face dropped in plastic hands is delicious in a being john malkovich way.

related/unrelated it reminded me of AM Homes’ iconic story A REAL DOLL from her collection Safety of Objects, which got me good so many years ago i’d forgotten all about it, but I just googled, and lo, the PDF of it is all right here

Enjoy! And thanks for your wonderful work!
